Andersonville Cares

Partners: Swedish Hospital & Great Lakes Clinical Trials

The Andersonville Chamber of Commerce has launched the Andersonville Cares Initiative to keep our community safe throughout what will be a very long winter. We anticipate a lot of folks will be facing different forms of depression and anxiety around the election, seasonal change, holidays, and more. We want to provide information to both businesses and residents that help connect them with mental health resources, flu shots, and COVID testing in the Andersonville Area.

Flu Shots

Flu Basics
Influenza (flu) is a contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza viruses. It can cause mild to severe illness. Serious outcomes of flu infection can result in hospitalization or death. Some people, such as older people, young children, and people with certain health conditions, are at high risk for serious flu complications. The best way to prevent the flu is by getting vaccinated each year.  (Centers for Disease Control)

  • Flu season typically starts in the fall and peaks in January or February.
  • Getting a flu shot is your best protection against the flu.

If you have symptoms of flu and are worried about your illness contact your health care provider.  Certain people are at greater risk of serious flu-related complications (including young children, elderly persons, pregnant women and people with certain long-term medical conditions). (A full list of people at higher risk of flu related complications is available at People at High Risk of Developing Flu-Related Complications.)

Flu signs and symptoms usually include fever and respiratory symptoms, such as cough and runny nose, and possibly other symptoms, such as body aches, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea.  For more helpful advice and a national perspective on preparations for the 2019-2020 flu season, visit the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as well as
The Chicago Department of Public Health (CDPH) is hosting over 50 community flu clinics where Chicago residents can get their annual flu shot at no cost regardless of their immigration status. If you have insurance, please bring a copy of your insurance card. Walk-ins are welcome and the pre-registration page is coming soon.
