Choir Boy

The Charles R. Drew Prep School for Boys is dedicated to the development of strong, ethical black men.  Determined to make his mark like those before him, Pharus Jonathan Young is steadfast on being the best choir leader in the school’s fifty-year history.  As a gay male, can he find his way inside the hallowed halls steeped in rites, rituals, and conformity if he sings in his own key?  Laced with soaring spirituals, this coming-of-age drama is an exciting commencement of our season.

Choir Boy was first produced by the Manhattan Theatre Club in New York during the summer of 2013.  Charles Isherwood in The New York Times called it an “affecting and honest portrait…of a gay youth tentatively beginning to find the courage to let the truth about himself become known” and KCRW in Los Angeles said it was “A play to see and a playwright to watch!”  This Chicago Premiere will be directed by Raven’s Co-founder and Producing Artistic Director Michael Menendian.

Choir Boy will take place in Raven’s 130-seat East Stage from September 27 to November 12, 2017.
