Suddenly Last Summer by Tennessee Williams
05/02/2018 - 06/17/2018
7:30 pm - 3:00 pm
Wealthy New Orleans widow Violet Venable is trying to silence her niece Catherine, the only witness to the death of Violet’s son Sebastian. Catherine has been giving a horrifying description of the circumstances under which Sebastian was killed and Mrs. Venable is unwilling to accept that account as well as other assertions about her son’s life. She pursues extraordinary measures to keep Catherine quiet in this haunting one-act.
Suddenly Last Summer originally opened on Broadway in 1958, toward the end of a 15-year period in which Williams produced his greatest and most popular works, from The Glass Menagerie (1944) through Sweet Bird of Youth (1959). The 1959 film adaptation starring Katharine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift was a box office hit and earned Academy Award nominations for Hepburn and Taylor.
Raven started in 1983 with a production of Williams’ 27 Wagons Full of Cotton and is thrilled to include one of his works in the 35th anniversary season. Suddenly Last Summer will be directed by visiting artist Jason Gerace, who will be making his Raven Theatre debut. He received the 2014 Non-Equity Jeff Award in Outstanding Direction for Strawdog Theatre Company’s Great Expectations.
Suddenly Last Summer will take place in Raven’s 130-seat East Stage from May 2 to June 17, 2018.
