Description
The Edgewater GRalley, Chicago’s Northside street festival, has proven its musical flair. The festival has officially announced its 2008 headliners featuring Chicago’s very own award-winning Fareed Haque Quartet , eclectic country group Janesville and the Brazilian beats of Chicago Samba. Bands such as Ben Porter and the Strangers, JT and The Clouds 6 piece, Katie Todd, and many others are also scheduled to perform on multiple stages throughout the one day event. Kid’s favorite and national recording star Susan Salidor and Boocoo Connections will also be performing for the younger GRalley goers.
A unique and significant element of the Edgewater GRalley is its location: the “alleys” of GRanville avenue. Though strongly identified with Chicago city living, Chicago’s alley system has never been expressly leveraged in the naming of a city-wide street festival. The GRalley will come alive in the streets, courtyards and alleys in and around St. Gertrude Parish and adjoining NCA School on Glenwood and Granville Avenues.
The event is being title-sponsored by Uncommon Ground Restaurants and is being produced by St. Gertrude’s Parish. Funds will be used to enhance St. Gertrude’s programming within the Edgewater community.
Though the 19 recording artists are the main attraction, the GRalley is jam-packed with many other sights and sounds. A few of these GReat activities are:
The Inaugural GRalley Pig Roast. This competition is not to be missed. Judged by local celebrities, top local culinary schools including Kendell College will compete for the best pork sandwich. All paying attendees will enjoy a free sandwich from one of the contestants or from Gert’s GRille.
A GReener GRalley. This event is as green as GRalley’s get. Besides powering the stages with Eco-friendly generators, exhibits will be held in and around the GReen pavilion where Chicago’s Department of Environment will be giving a GReen 101 on the dos and don’ts of eco-friendly living. To save space—and trees—bike parking is available.
Artist Alley. GRalley goers will have the opportunity to meet and greet with local artists who will be showcasing their work. They’ll also have the opportunity to purchase a piece from each of their favorite artists through the silent auction.
Sports Corner. No need to worry about missing Saturday’s game. Grab a sandwich and a brew and enjoy College football and MLB Baseball all through the day and night on satellite-fed TVs.
Kids Korner Featuring the League of Eco-Heros. Kids will enjoy activities such as arts and crafts, games, magic shows, and performers with an eco-friendly focus. Each of 9 stations will feature a specific Eco-hero who, in partnership with kids, can make this a more livable planet. State Representative Harry Osterman’s office is sponsoring The League of Eco-Heros.
Local Silent Auction. The GRalley silent auction is one of the anticipated highlights of the festival where tickets and certificates to some of Chicago’s most popular shops and shows like the Goodman, Steppenwolf, and Hubbard Street Theatre will be bid for. Other auction items include dancing lessons, voice lessons, artwork, dinners, and more.
Eats and Beer Tents. Tents throughout the festival will be serving up satisfaction with a taste of Edgewater’s local favorites. From Falafel to French Fries, get those taste buds ready for the Northside’s finest. All vendors will also be participating in the GReen theme by using eco-friendly products.
Lead sponsors for this event are Uncommon Ground Restaurants, Bud Light, Representative Harry Osterman, John Coleman - Baird & Warner Realtor, John & Dawn Wyman - Coldwell Banker Realtors, and Saint Gertrude Parish.
